Gaming Aggression and Addiction

The BBC has a tendency to report in their health and wellness sections various studies that are performed surrounding video gaming. Back in 2001 (I know it is slightly dated) a study about gaming and aggression in children was performed. The study found that when children exhibited more aggression it was generally because of the amount of time spent gaming and watching television. Check out the full article here.

The BBC also came out with a recent documentary on gaming addiction. The documentary exhibits extreme gaming addictions and residual effects on an individual's life and well being. If you want to check out the documentary click here.

The Future of Gaming is Here

GDC came and went again, and once again, the Developer's conference has delivered something for gamers to look forward to. Epic finally unveiled some of the details behind their Unreal Engine 3, which supports full Direct X11. The event itself has brought some exciting news, however, to some, even words like DirectX 11 or even Unreal Engine mean nothing, so I won't even go into detail Subsurface Scattering and Deferred Rendering. What I will do is explain what the mean for gaming visuals in the most simple terms possible, with images to help illustrate this provided by ign.com. The big draw is realistic lighting reflections. Previously something incredibly difficult to render graphically is now coming around. It demonstrates how light now acts more realistic on a variety of surfaces. This allows for more interaction with the environment as well as for overall better looking games. Subsurface Scattering also deals with rendering light, and its easiest to explain using the example of a human being as opposed to a plastic action figure. The light doesn't always reflect off human skin making it look glossy like many video games have been displaying it lately. On the contrary, it is quite common for it to penetrate certain areas. Even games that have had amazing visuals (see Uncharted) have also fallen to such smaller details. What Epic promises with Unreal Engine 3 is indeed something revolutionary for lighting in game visuals.
The other big thing about the engine
is anti-aliasing. Aliasing refers to the jagged look of a lot of video games, sharp edges where those shouldn't be. The new engine promises a more refined process that makes surfaces smoother, especially hair.
There are a few other innovative ideas that come from Unreal Engine 3. The new engine will also aid in better displaying depth of field for many games as well as make deferred rendering available to a wider array of developers. Deferred rendering allows for scenes in games to be "drawn" at the last possible second which also allows to get
more lighting and details to be displayed on screen. For more information and a detailed breakdown of all of the features by someone who knows a whole lot more than me head over to IGN.

Gaming as a Cause for Concern

Gaming addiction: is it a problem or does it have the potential for problems? The Ottawa Citizen feels there is cause for concern in this recent article:

A game too far: When kids, gaming, and parenting collide

Mac vs PC: Gaming

So, I think we can all agree the Mac vs. PC thing is kinda a moot point now. Who cares what system you use? Well, gamers know who's the boss. Here's some of the funnier spoofs out there:

and

What type of gamer are you?

Casual gamer

A casual gamer is a player whose time or interest in playing games is limited. Casual gamers tend to play games designed for ease of gameplay and don't spend much time playing more involved games. The genres that casual gamers play vary, and they might not own a specific video game console to play their games. Casual gaming demographics vary greatly from those of traditional computer games, as the typical casual gamer is older and more predominantly female. One casual gamer subset is the "fitness gamer", who plays motion-based exercise games.

Hardcore gamer

Hardcore gamers prefer to take significant time and practice on games, and tend to play more involved games that require larger amounts of time to complete or master. Competition is another defining characteristic of hardcore gamers, who often compete in organized tournaments, leagues, or ranked play integrated into the game proper. There are many subtypes of hardcore gamers based on the style of game, gameplay preference, hardware platform, and other preferences.

Pro gamer

Professional gamers play video games for money. Whether a professional gamer is a subtype of the hardcore gamer largely depends on the degree to which a professional gamer is financially dependent upon the income derived from gaming. So far as a professional gamer is financially dependent upon gaming, the time spent playing is no longer "leisure" time. In countries of Asia, particularly South Korea and Japan, professional gamers are sponsored by large companies and can earn more than $100,000USD a year, in addition to the following that some obtain.

Newbie

Newbie, or "noob", is a slang term for a novice to a certain game, or to gaming in general. It can have derogatory connotations, but is also often used for descriptive purposes only, without a value judgment. Two derived terms are "newb", a beginner who is willing to learn; and "noob", a derogatory name (an alternate spelling for noob is n00b).

Retrogamer

A retrogamer is a gamer preferring playing and collecting retro games - older computer, video, and arcade games. The term retrogamer is used mostly in the UK and Europe, while the terms classic gamer, or old school gamer are more prevalent in the US and Canada. The games are played either on the original hardware , on modern hardware via emulators. Some retrogamers are in the business of refurbishing old games like arcade games, while some even make their own.

Girl gamer

A girl gamer is any female who regularly engages in playing video games. According to a study conducted by the Entertainment Software Association in 2009, 40% of the game playing population is female, and women 18 or older now comprise 34% of all gamers. Also, the percentage of women now playing online has risen to 43%, up 4% from 2004. The same study shows that 48% of game purchasers are female.

Gaymer

Gaymer is an umbrella term used to refer to the group of people who identify themselves as part of the LGBTQ and have an active interest in the video game community (gamers). While mostly used as a positive identifier by those within the group and their supporters, it can also be used in a derogatory fashion, similar to its root word.

Opinion: Xbox 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii vs. Older Systems

Recently a comment on this blog asked what our opinion here at Plataformed is on the debate about which is better, Xbox or Playstation. To answer this question we here at Plataformed hosted a small panel and this is the discussion that came out of it:

Vlada: The question clearly isn’t new, and realistically it should take into account one other gaming platform, the Nintendo Wii. These three platforms are considered to be the most popular gaming consoles when considering consoles that are not in themselves personal computers. Let us turn to our writers here at Plataformed and get their opinions…
Liz: I'm old school because I still prefer my old Super Nintendo to all of the new systems available. Until they can recreate the general awesomeness of Final Fantasy 3 and Crono Trigger, I'll stick with it. It still works, 15 years later!
Vlada: Liz definitely has a point; there is no reason to exclude older systems from this conversation. Older systems provided hours of fun in earlier years and as long as they continue to function they are something to consider as a source of entertainment.
Lauren: I’m on the same page as Liz. I still play games on the more traditional systems like N64, if you haven’t guessed yet from my posts. If I had to choose between the Xbox, Playstation, or Wii; I would go with the Wii. It is more of a neutral gaming system and you do not have to be addicted to gaming to enjoy playing it. The Wii is also great for the ability of downloading older games and it is always good for party scenarios. In all fairness it is hard for me to judge the other two systems because I have had limited contact with them.
Vlada: Unlike Lauren and Liz, I no longer own any older systems. However, I do own both a Playstation 3 and an Xbox 360 so it’s easier for me to make a comparison between the two.
In terms of game play, the two are relatively similar; the main issue is game exclusivity. To remain competitive, consoles often seek to receive game exclusivity and in return allow software development companies permission to create games for the platform. The platform that is best for a person is usually the platform that carries the games that the individual is interested in. Due to this, the best way to choose a platform is to first find games that one is interested in and then proceeding to see which platforms carry it.
Currently however my personal preference is the Playstation 3. The main reason for this is because a PS3 is ever so slightly more compatible with a MacBook than the Xbox 360. Microsoft makes the Xbox 360 so it only makes sense that a Mac product wouldn’t work well with it. The Playstation 3, on the other hand, is slightly easier to work with in terms of connecting to a Mac. However, it’s still necessary to research and download a program in order to use thePS3 and Mac together.
The other reason I currently prefer the Playstation consol to the Xbox is because of the “Red Ring of Death”. The ring appeared on the face of the console around the power button that flashes red just a day after buying a new game for my Xbox 306. Depending on which side of the ring is lit, the problem may be fixable. The E74 error I was receiving means that the Xbox 360's hardware scaler chip is damaged, a problem that isn’t easily or permanently fixable. Now I’m stuck with a console that sits around and no longer works until I decided to purchase a newer version of the system, which is supposedly less likely to have such errors.
However, as I stressed initially, the game console chosen directly relates to the kinds of games that a person enjoys. This especially applies to the Wii that tends to release games that are multiplayer, family oriented, and often directed to individuals that would not consider themselves to be ‘gamers.’
Liz: Also, we should include PC games as a platform. If anything, PC is probably one of the most accessible platforms since so many of us already have the hardware and internet access. Many gamers prefer using their PC for convenience and cost - you can download most games (illegally, of course, not that we are encouraging anyone to do so) in a few days and save yourself a lot of money. Plus, most of us are already on there quite a bit already, so gaming via PC is just a natural move.
Lauren: Whether you enjoy multiplatform gaming, more tradition ‘old school’ games, or shooter games; these three systems all have a different genre that they satisfy best. Now that the writers at Plataformed have given you reasons for why we enjoy the various gaming systems, leave us a note telling us which system is your favourite and why. Also, don’t be shy and vote on which gaming system is the best!

The Death of N64 and the Rise of Procrastination

The creation of the Nintendo Game Cube marked the death of the Nintendo 64. Nintendo saw no reason to produce an obsolete gaming system and instead focused its efforts on producing games for the newer game console as well as producing new gaming systems (for example the Wii). With the ‘death’ of Nintendo 64, nostalgia settled in for the N64 gamers, who might not have a working gaming system, and so the loss of N64 gaming seemed complete. Or so I thought...

In second year, my introduction to emulators came in the form of a guy, sitting in the front row of my class, playing the Nintendo 64 Paper Mario game on his computer. After my shock at seeing this seemingly impossible thing had subsided, I called up my tech friends and asked how this guy could possible play an N64 game on his computer. One friend sarcastically responded  that “he downloaded an emulator, duh.”

After this revelation, I began researching emulators. I figured out quickly that emulators would be a great way to reminisce about my childhood days and to procrastinate. I now had potential access to games that I had not seen or played for a long time. I began downloading games like Conker’s Bad Fur Day and Zelda. It was great. Check out Cool Rom if you have the desire to play an old ‘traditional game’. They have a step by step guide on how to download the emulator and games. Try out an emulator and enjoy the hours of procrastination.

The Online Gamer

Some gamers just don’t realize they can’t behave the same way with each platform they use, especially if that platform is real life.

Musings on Hidden Innuendo in Mario Kart 64

Like Lauren, I have early memories of my brother and I playing N64 – Mario Kart to be exact. My brother always played Yoshi, the swallowing, jumping, stomping dino sidekick of Mario’s, whereas I would select the lone female character, Peach.

Peach is the quintessential female character. She gets kidnapped constantly. She wears pink. And unlike her dwarf fungi subjects in the Mushroom Kingdom, she is a babe. She is blonde and blue-eyed and tall –much taller than her saviour, Mario. She is used to represent the ideal beauty, an epitome of femininity. She is the answer in Mario Kart to eye candy and a character that appeals to female gamers. Her 'kart' was considered ‘light’ so she was faster than larger characters, unlike her wannabe suitor and frequent captor Bowser. Bowser towers over Peach, his size being one physical indicator of power. The other being that he is a super mutant turtle creature, and not of the crime-fighting teenage ninja variety.

I always wondered why Bowser was always kidnapping the Princess. Were there really 'magic' mushrooms being hoarded in the mushroom kingdom? Or were the inventors trying to subtly engage their fan boys with a nuance of bestiality? He was always trying to marry her; we can’t say if all he was really after was the wealth, resources and eroding the land boundaries of her kingdom.

….

I don’t think I will ever think about Mario games the same way again.

Saved game on a different platform? It's possible!

Have you ever saved and quit a pc game and thought, wouldn’t it be awesome to pick up where I left off on my iPhone or Xbox? Well recent technology shifts have given us the answer. At Tech Ed Middle East, a Microsoft engineer demonstrated just that using a Windows computer, a Windows 7 Series phone, and an Xbox 360. Granted all the platforms were created by Microsoft, the idea of syncing systems isn’t revolutionary – it’s just common sense. The technology keeps your games saved on a server, so whenever you load your game on a different platform, it allows you to pull up your previously saved game and continue. Microsoft needs to gimmicks to keep up with the competition and keep itself ahead in the gaming department over Sony. Of course it also keeps consumers buying Microsoft products and systems.

It’s a mixed blessing. On one hand you have most popular operating system, a top gaming system, and a quality audio device, interaction between them was inevitable and desirable. On the other the Microsoft definition of cross-platform can be translated as “Runs on Microsoft, and runs on Microsoft, and runs on Microsoft."

There is also the consideration of do you really want to play COD on your phone? In public?! Pass.

Noticing the Male Gaze in Gaming

Have you ever noticed that the depiction of gender is dependent on the gaming platform?

Growing up with video games has allowed me to see the revolution of various gaming platforms. One noticeable evolution is the gender portrayals in the gaming world. When the Game Boy and Super Nintendo Entertainment systems were on the scene, most of the games depicted hyper-masculine central characters that generally needed to save the world and dominate the female characters. Now with the introduction of gaming systems like the Wii and the Xbox Kinect, whose target audience is the family, games for these systems are less subservient towards the males gaze.
